The Winner

Former Pulp front man turned successful solo star and Radio DJ, Jarvis Cocker has been hosting the Sunday Service on BBC6 Music since January this year. Cocker is renowned for his wit and observations of the cultural scene and through his work with the band, he became a figurehead of the Britpop movement of the mid-1990s.

The judging panel shortlisted Jarvis Cocker for his distinctive presenting method and for advocating new music which they said made him one of the stand-out entries. Jarvis's show sees him delve deep into his record collection of soundtracks, spoken word and quality nuggets help to soothe listeners through a lazy Sunday afternoon.

The voting public clearly agreed as thousands flocked online to support him and the accolade couldn't come at a better time for the station as the BBC undergo a review of its services.

ABOUT THE AWARD

The Sony DAB 'Rising Star' Award was launched in 2008 to discover the brightest radio stars of the future. Open to those who have been broadcasting on air for no longer than 18 months; this year's winner will be announced on Monday 10th May, 2010 at the Sony Radio Academy Awards ceremony. As the only people's choice award of the prestigious event, this category offers listeners the opportunity to have their say and reward their favourite new DJs.

Eligible broadcasters submitted their entries which were then reviewed by a respected panel of judges, made up of current radio talent and media specialists, who selected the shortlist of nominees. The winner is chosen by the listeners as they vote online to have their say. Last year's winner was the unique and talented Singing Henry and this year's finalists include a selection of well known names, who have recently turned their hand to the world of radio such as Jarvis Cocker of BBC 6 Music, as well as some exciting new raw talent including Max Dickins of Absolute Radio and Waqas Saeed (Wax) of BBC Asian Network.
