The judges said: The Broken Heart DJ's Peppermint Candy show brings together a retro mix of music and fashion from the 20's to the 50's. The DJ's have a great energy and rapport between them, that makes the show very engaging and brings the topics discussed to life for the listeners.

Phil Taggart

Radio 1 - BBC Introducing in Northern lreland
Midnight - 2am, Monday nights

The judges were impressed by Phil's infectious enthusiasm for the music he plays. He is able to evangalise about new music in a very natural and "non geeky" way. Here is a DJ who clearly loves the contemporary music scene and is able to relate that to his listeners in a very exciting manner.

Fun Kids DAB – The Club / The Treehouse
The Club (weekdays 4pm-7pm)
The Treehouse (Saturday 4pm-7pm, Sunday 10am-12pm)

The judges felt that Luke was completely "on target" with his demo. Knowing exactly who he was communicating with, Luke connected with his youthful audience providing information without appearing patronizing; in fact quite the opposite, his light, entertaining, and engaging delivery made Fun Kids radio a brilliant listen for adults and children alike.

Kiss FM - Saturday Breakfast show 6am-10am

The judges said: Clara's energy, understanding and obvious love of radio was absolutely infectious. And we also got to see a hugely mature handling of difficult topics including the London Riots of 2011. We felt she had a huge amount of potential and is definitely one of our brightest stars to look forward to hearing more from her.

French Radio London – French Toast Tuesdays at 11pm

The judges said: Frank McWeeny effortlessly navigates between French and English which gives his presentation a disarming charm that sooths and washes over you. He also really knows and engages with the dance music he plays making him both authoritative and highly listenable.

ABOUT THE AWARD

The Sony DAB 'Rising Star' Award was launched in 2008 to reward up and coming radio stars of the future. Open to those who have been broadcasting on radio for no longer than 18 months, this year's winner will be announced on Monday May 14th 2012 at the Sony Radio Academy Awards ceremony. As the only people's choice award, this category offers listeners the opportunity to have their say and reward their favourite new DJs.

A record 56 eligible broadcasters submitted their entries that were reviewed by a respected panel of judges, including, who drew up a shortlist of nominees.

The winner is chosen by listeners who vote online to have their say. Last year's winner was Robbie Savage and this year's finalists again include a selection of well known names who have recently taken to the airwaves, as well as some exciting newcomers.
